Chapter Fourteen

Back in the kitchen, the smell of burnt bread was strong and Tommy secretly hoped that the squirrels were enjoying their breakfast. If not, her fastidious landlady would be complaining about toast in her flower garden and it wouldn't take Sherlock Homes to figure out the source of the contamination. Old Mrs. Jennings, lived below, and was too arthritic to open a window. Oh well, Tommy sighed and cut another slice of bread.

Tommy skipped the toaster oven and spread on the mayo, laid in sliced ham, cheese and topped off her sandwich with fresh lettuce and a little Dijon. She wrapped her lunch in cellophane and added a pickle to the brown paper bag. With lunch settled there was only the question of what to wear. Summer hadn't quite settled in, though it was mid June. From her closet she picked out a pleated tweed skirt with matching jacket, a cream colored silk blouse. She pulled on pantyhose and laced up comfortable walking shoes.

Tommy strapped on the Beretta and headed out the back door. Her stomach did the usual flip-flop one gets when they discover that their car isn’t where they parked it. Then realization slowly dawned; she trudged back through the apartment building and down the front steps to where the Corvette awaited dutifully by the curb.

Twenty minutes later she was parked outside the Davis Apartments, enjoying the strong sunshine as it streamed through the windshield and eyeing the large double glass doors. It seemed innocent enough but Tommy couldn’t help wonder how many women had passed through those doors into a living purgatory: endlessly milked of their cash and self respect. Well I'm going to do something about that, she thought grimly, pulling the City map from the glove box. She got out from behind the wheel and looked at the surrounding apartment buildings. There seemed to be a lot of them.

Tommy checked her street map. The Davis Apartments were adjacent to the parkland that followed the serpentine course of the river. Like the bull’s eye on a range target, streets radiated out in ever-widening circles while side streets crossed like the spokes of a spider's web. Beth had said she and her brother lived a couple of blocks over and, hoping she was being literal, Tommy walked two blocks out and turned left. Her plan was to follow the semi-circle on the inner side of the street, cross over and do the outer side of the circle until she hit the park on the opposite side of the Davis Apartments. It seemed simple enough, the ground covered looked like a couple of miles.

The area was made up of older homes, many of which had been changed over to duplex apartments. There were also quite a few walk-ups, and then, where there had once been a house-fire or at the whim of an enterprising developer, modern buildings of fifteen or twenty floors, marred the skyline.

She approached the door of the first building, a three story, where a middle aged woman was busily burnishing the glass under a green canvas canopy.
